The first thing you need to know is that software developer Inv Softworks has two Kryptel versions to offer: Kryptel and Kryptel Lite. The first version, Kryptel, is feature-complete and allows you to do the following:

- Encrypt files and folders with strong encryption algorithms
- Kryptel integrates with the Windows Explorer, which means that the functionality it provides is never more than a click away. To encrypt a file you need only right click a file and you will see an encryption option in the right click context menu. Alternatively you can encrypt a file by dragging and dropping it to the Kryptel shortcut on the desktop.

- With Kryptel you can also create encrypted backups. Save the backups online, and you will always have access to them, even if your computer is destroyed.
- Advanced users can create scripts that can, for example, locate and encrypt every Word file stored on the hard drive.
- Kryptel comes with a fully-functional command line interface that can be run as a server-side script in unattended mode.
- Kryptel uses a password dialog that identifies typing errors when the user enters the password to decrypt a file.
- There are two ways to gain access to Kryptel encrypted data: provide the right password or use a binary key stored on an USB stick. Kryptel will locate and use the binary key automatically.
- Kryptel provides support for numerous Windows versions, starting with Windows 95 and up to the latest and greatest, Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-editions).

The second version software developer Inv Softworks has to offer is Kryptel Lite. This, as the name so adequately points out, is a lightweight version of Kryptel. The good news is that Kryptel Lite is freeware, integrates with Windows Explorer, and lets you easily encrypt files. The bad news is that Kryptel Lite Iron Key uses a less powerful encryption algorithm, cannot encrypt folders, cannot put multiple files in an encrypted file, does not provide support for binary key files, and does not support data compression. There’s more – the developer does not provide support for Kryptel Lite.

If you want access to enhanced functionality, you need to part with a bit of money and get Kryptel. If you want a simple, lightweight encryption utility that doesn’t cost a thing, stick with Kryptel Lite. The choice is up to you.

Pros

  • Lightweight download (Kryptel Lite weighs in at 1.2MB)
  • Easy to use
  • Integrates with Windows Explorer
  • Freeware

Cons

  • Not as many features as Kryptel
